How To Train Your Dog To Have Better Impulse Control

If your dog is impulsive, can’t follow your orders, and is misbehaving, there are a few different ways you can improve their overall impulse control, and avoid common behavioral problem issues. Learn top dog impulse control techniques from the team at Dog Dayz of California now!

  1. Treats In The Fist
Put some kibble or a treat in your closed fist. Hold it in front of your dog’s nose, and ignore his attempts to get to the food. Once he stops trying to get to the food, give him a reward like a treat.

Once he ignores the fist with treats completely, you can move onto the next step. Open the fist holding the food. If he tries to rush and grab it, close it again. Repeat this process until he ignores your open palm of food. Then, reward him with a treat.

  1. Crate & Door Control
If your dog is crated or kept in a particular room, give your dog some time to settle down. Then, ask him to sit or go down.

When the dog is in the sitting or down position, slowly open the door. If he gets up and tries to rush through, stop and tell him to sit or go down again.

Continue this process until your dog stays in place when you open the door. As you continue doing this, the number of times you’ll need to repeat the steps will decrease.

When your dog stays in place while the door is open, give him his release command and let him come through. This helps teach patience and self-control.

  1. Waiting For Dinner
Have our dog sit or go in a down position. Place his food bowl in front of him. If he lunges or tries to get up to get the food, remove it and stand back up. Repeat this process until he stays.

Once the bowl is on the ground, cover it with your hands, then remove them. If your dog is still sitting in place. If he lunges for it, cover it again. Repeat this process until your dog stays in position while the food is uncovered. Then, give him a release command and allow him to eat his dinner.
